Tournament essentials at a glance

AFCON 2027 β€” branded the Pamoja bid (Swahili for "together") β€” runs from 19 June to 17 July 2027, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. CAF confirmed dates in late April 2026. It is the first AFCON hosted by three nations, and the first held in the CECAFA region since Ethiopia in 1976.

Format and date confirmations per CAF, FIFA, and reporting in Daily Nation, NTV Kenya, and Punch (Nigeria); qualifier draw and matchday calendar per the CAF draw in Cairo, 19 May 2026, and CAF scheduling confirmations reported in July 2026. Last re-verified 14 August 2026.

The road to 2027 starts 23 September β€” the draw is out

The Cairo draw (19 May 2026) split 48 nations into 12 groups of four. The first competitive window opens 23–29 September 2026 β€” matchdays 1 and 2 back-to-back β€” and it is the first real betting window on the road to Pamoja. The two groups that matter most for our readers:

GroupTeamsThe storyline
Group D (Kenya)South Africa, Guinea, Kenya, EritreaHarambee Stars are already qualified as co-hosts, but these are their only competitive fixtures before the finals β€” and coach Benni McCarthy faces South Africa, whose all-time scoring record he still holds.
Group L (Nigeria)Nigeria, Tanzania, Madagascar, Guinea-BissauThe Super Eagles drew a co-host: Tanzania's results don't block Nigeria's path, making this a favourable route β€” September opens at home to Madagascar, then away to Guinea-Bissau.

Qualifier windows are exactly where the USDT-bankroll discipline below earns its keep: money sits idle for weeks between matchdays, and accumulator structures across a window are how sports welcome bonuses (like 1xBet's 5x on 3+ leg accumulators) are actually cleared. Price any qualifier-window offer first:

Host cities and the "home crowd" edge

Three host nations means up to ten venue cities β€” broader than the original nine-venue plan. The provisional venue list informs market pricing well in advance: travel logistics, altitude, climate, and crowd composition all bleed into team performance and live-betting volatility.

  • Kenya. Nairobi is the anchor β€” the 60,000-capacity Talanta Sports City complex (Raila Odinga Stadium) is the headline build, with the 48,000-seat Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani as the second Nairobi venue. Eldoret (~2,100 m altitude) and Kakamega round out the Kenyan slate.
  • Tanzania. Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam is the prime venue. Arusha (the Samia Suluhu Stadium) and Zanzibar (Amaan and Fumba) are also on the proposed list β€” coastal humidity is a real variable for second-half match modelling.
  • Uganda. Kampala's Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) leads, with Hoima City Stadium and the Akii Bua Stadium in Lira completing the Ugandan venues.

Home-crowd impact at AFCON is empirically large. The host team has reached the semi-finals at five of the last seven editions. With three hosts in 2027 β€” and three different crowd profiles β€” the outright pre-tournament market will price all three above their raw FIFA ranking. That is exploitable on group-stage match-up lines, less so on outrights.

The qualifier window is the bigger betting opportunity

The finals are 30 matches over four weeks. The qualifiers are 144 matches across 13 months β€” and that is where most of the bankroll work happens for a disciplined bettor. Format details confirmed by CAF and reported in May 2026:

  • 48 teams, 12 groups of 4. Three hosts (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania) are placed in groups but their results don't affect their own qualification β€” that produces a real motivation-asymmetry that the market regularly misprices, especially on matchday 5–6.
  • Only the group winner advances. In groups containing one of the three hosts, only one of the remaining three teams progresses β€” making head-to-head and goal-difference markets uniquely valuable.
  • Three windows. Preliminary round in March 2026 (already closed by the time most of you read this); matchdays 1–4 in September and October 2026; the deciding matchdays 5–6 in March 2027.
  • Harambee Stars are in Pot C. Kenya was seeded into Pot C ahead of the 19 May 2026 draw, meaning they will share a group with one Pot A team, one Pot B team, and one Pot D team. The full group is fixed at the draw.

The structural lesson: AFCON 2027 is a 13-month betting cycle, not a 30-match cycle. Build a USDT bankroll now, not in June 2027.

Why USDT for a 13-month tournament cycle

The case for USDT over NGN, KES, or BTC for a long-cycle tournament is the same as for the World Cup, only more so. The cycle is longer, the prices move slower, and your bankroll has to survive multiple FX cycles.

  • Stable bankroll. USDT is pegged to the dollar. A KES 100,000 bankroll might swing 6–9% against the dollar over 13 months; a BTC bankroll can swing 40% in the same window. USDT removes that noise so your wagering math stays accurate from the draw to the final whistle.
  • Speed and cost. USDT on TRON or Solana settles in seconds for cents. Most offshore crypto sportsbooks credit one block confirmation. No waiting for a bank wire to clear before kick-off on matchday 6 in March 2027.
  • No card-issuer block. Nigerian cards routinely fail at gambling MCC merchants. Kenyan banks tighten controls around major tournaments. Crypto rails sidestep both β€” your deposit either confirms on-chain or it doesn't.

The markets you will actually use

AFCON pricing is structurally different from European competition: limited match-tape, thin public information on tier-2 sides, and big variance in pitch quality and travel logistics. Four families of bets do the real work β€” three of them tend to clear bonus wagering at 100% contribution.

1. Match Result (1X2)

The cleanest market. On heavy favourites (Senegal or Morocco vs a Pot D side at 1.20–1.40) the price is sharp; on toss-up matches between tier-2 sides the books are vulnerable to model-driven disagreement. 1X2 at minimum-odds usually contributes 100% to bonus wagering.

2. Over / Under 2.5 Goals

AFCON has historically run under-the-line at the group stage β€” the average goals per match across the last three AFCONs sits near 2.3. The matchday-3 dead-rubber effect (when hosts have already secured passage and tier-2 sides chase qualifying points) sometimes pushes overs, but never expect a goal avalanche.

3. Asian Handicap

The single best market for unbalanced fixtures β€” and the qualifier window will be packed with them. AH Β±0.5 / Β±1.0 lines remove the draw from the equation and tighten the price. Most crypto books credit AH bets to wagering at 100% provided minimum odds are met.

4. Outright Winner / Group Winner

Long-cycle bets that lock your stake until July 2027. Outright tickets are bonus-unfriendly (most do not contribute at all, and some books void them if the bonus expires) β€” pay for them out of unmatched cash, never bonus funds. Host-nation outrights tend to be overpriced; defending champions and Morocco tend to be underpriced.

AFCON 2027 bonuses β€” pricing them honestly

Every offshore book will run an AFCON-themed bonus once the draw is made on 19 May 2026, and again in the run-up to the September 2026 qualifier window. The headlines look generous ("200% up to 26,000 KES", "180% deposit boost", "free bet on Harambee Stars"). What matters is the Keep Rate β€” the share of headline value you can actually withdraw after wagering, max-bet, and contribution rules.

A bankroll plan for the qualifier window

Long tournament cycles break amateur bettors because the volume is uneven. You will get four matchdays in September and October 2026, then nothing until March 2027, then the finals. A staking plan that survives the gaps is the whole game.

  • Fix a tournament bankroll. Convert your starting amount to USDT and ring-fence it. This is the only money the qualifier-window and finals get to consume.
  • Set a unit size at 1%. On a 200 USDT bankroll, 1 unit = 2 USDT. The longer the cycle, the smaller the unit β€” AFCON 2027 is 13 months from the May 2026 draw to the July 2027 final.
  • Cap stakes per match at 2 units. Variance is brutal across tier-2 international football. Even on a high-confidence Harambee Stars qualifier, never put more than 2% of the bankroll on a single match.
  • Separate bonus from cash. Wager bonus money on minimum-odds 1X2 or AH bets that contribute 100%. Spend cash on the bets you actually like. Mixing the two destroys the math.
  • Withdraw winnings to a cold wallet between windows. Move profit out of the sportsbook to a non-custodial wallet between matchday windows (October 2026 and March 2027). Keeps you honest and reduces platform-risk during the dormant months.

Where to bet from Kenya and Nigeria

WagerScope only covers operators we have personally tested with real deposits and withdrawals. For AFCON 2027 from Kenya and Nigeria, the two strongest crypto-native sportsbooks are 1xBet (deepest African football markets and the most aggressive AFCON odds boosts year-on-year) and BC.Game (provably fair originals + a competitive sportsbook with very fast crypto payouts). M-Pesa-first local brands like Betika sit in a different lane β€” covered below.

1xBet

The deepest African football coverage available to Kenyan and Nigerian players, with AFCON qualifier markets typically posted 72+ hours ahead of kick-off. Accepts USDT, BTC, M-Pesa, and local NG rails. Read our full 1xBet Kenya review or the Nigeria review for the wagering breakdown.

BC.Game

Crypto-first, provably fair on originals, and a sportsbook that has matured fast. M-Pesa-friendly via the USDT route, and withdrawals typically clear in minutes β€” useful for the long gap between qualifier windows. Full mechanics in our BC.Game review.

For a side-by-side on bonus terms, payout speed, and Keep Rate, see our 1xBet vs BC.Game comparison. If you would rather use an M-Pesa-first Kenyan brand, our Betika bonus guide covers that alternative β€” different trade-off, same Keep Rate framework. Daily match-level previews will appear on the match previews page once the qualifier draw is made.

Regulation and tax β€” what to actually know

AFCON 2027 will trigger a wave of marketing across both onshore and offshore operators. The regulatory perimeter is the single most overlooked variable. Two clean things to keep in mind:

  • Kenya. GRAK (formerly BCLB; the Betting Control and Licensing Board was dissolved on 26 August 2025 under the Gambling Control Act 2025, Act No. 14 of 2025) regulates onshore betting. The transition is ongoing β€” BCLB-issued licences for the 2025/26 cycle remain valid until renewal under GRAK. Locally-licensed operators (Mozzart KE, Betika, SportPesa) apply a 20% withholding tax on winnings (Finance Act 2026, deducted at payout β€” never self-assessed; we model it on net winnings, but the Act as enacted leaves open whether it applies to the gross payout or only the gain, pending KRA guidance) and a 5% excise duty on deposits. 1xBet and BC.Game also run Kenyan sites: 1xBet as 1xbet.co.ke through Advanced Gaming Ltd and BC.Game as bcgame.ke through Blockdance Africa Ltd, both on the GRAK 2025/26 register (checked 29 September 2026), so players there face the same deposit excise and winnings withholding as at any licensed operator. Our 1xBet and BC.Game links go to the global brands (1xbet.com, bc.game, CuraΓ§ao-licensed). Sites with no Kenyan licence offer no GRAK consumer recourse if a dispute arises.
  • Nigeria. Onshore betting is licensed at the state level under FSGRN (Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria) via the Universal Reciprocity Certificate (URC) framework, following the Supreme Court's 22 November 2024 ruling that limited NLRC (National Lottery Regulatory Commission) authority to the Federal Capital Territory. 1xBet's Nigerian site, 1xbet.ng (Beauforbet Nigeria Ltd), is on the Lagos (LSLGA) licensed list until 5 August 2027; BC.Game's bcbet.ng is not on the LSLGA list as checked on 29 September 2026. Nigeria has no federal winnings tax, but Lagos-licensed operators such as 1xbet.ng withhold Lagos State's 5% tax on net winnings at payout (since February 2026). Sportsbooks with no state licence have no state-level consumer-recourse body if a dispute arises. NG SEC VASP rules govern crypto-betting tax exposure, and a crypto-gains tax of up to 25% can apply on crypto disposals if you off-ramp winnings to NGN. Keep records.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is AFCON 2027?

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations runs from 19 June to 17 July 2027, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under the "Pamoja" bid. It is the first AFCON hosted by three nations and the first staged in the CECAFA region since Ethiopia 1976.

Which cities and stadiums are hosting matches?

Up to ten cities are being considered. Kenya is putting forward Nairobi (the 60,000-capacity Talanta Sports City / Raila Odinga Stadium, plus the 48,000-seat Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani), Eldoret, and Kakamega. Tanzania has put forward Dar es Salaam (Benjamin Mkapa Stadium), Arusha, and Zanzibar. Uganda is proposing the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala plus Hoima and Lira.

Is Kenya automatically qualified for AFCON 2027?

Yes. As a co-host, Kenya is automatically through, alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The qualifier draw took place in Cairo on 19 May 2026: 48 nations in 12 groups of four, with the top finishers per group joining the three hosts to complete the 24-team field. Matchdays 1–2 run 23–29 September 2026, matchdays 3–4 in November 2026, and the final two matchdays in March 2027.

Which qualifying groups are Kenya and Nigeria in?

Kenya landed in Group D with South Africa, Guinea, and Eritrea β€” a headline subplot, since Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy still holds South Africa's all-time international scoring record. Nigeria drew co-host Tanzania alongside Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau: the Super Eagles open at home to Madagascar and away to Guinea-Bissau in the 23–29 September window, meet Tanzania home and away in November, and close in March 2027. Group results and fixtures per the CAF draw (cafonline.com) and Nigerian press reporting (Punch, Vanguard).

Is crypto betting on AFCON 2027 legal in Kenya?

Domestic betting is regulated by GRAK (formerly BCLB; the Betting Control and Licensing Board was dissolved on 26 August 2025 under the Gambling Control Act 2025). Locally-licensed operators (Mozzart KE, Betika, SportPesa) apply a 20% withholding tax on winnings (Finance Act 2026, in force since 1 July 2026, deducted at payout; we model it on net winnings, but the Act as enacted leaves open whether it applies to the gross payout or only the gain, pending KRA guidance) and a 5% excise duty on amounts deposited. Our 1xBet and BC.Game links go to the global brands (1xbet.com, bc.game, Curaçao-licensed). Sites that hold no Kenyan licence sit outside GRAK's perimeter, with no GRAK consumer recourse if a dispute arises.

Is crypto betting on AFCON 2027 legal in Nigeria?

Onshore sports betting in Nigeria is licensed at the state level under FSGRN (Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria), which issues a Universal Reciprocity Certificate (URC) under the May 2025 Subnational Reciprocity Licensing Framework. The Supreme Court's 22 November 2024 ruling nullified the National Lottery Act 2005 and limited NLRC (National Lottery Regulatory Commission) authority to the Federal Capital Territory. Crypto sportsbooks with no state licence are still accessed by Nigerian players but have no state-level consumer-recourse body β€” NG SEC VASP rules govern crypto-betting tax exposure, and a crypto-gains tax of up to 25% can apply on crypto disposals if you off-ramp winnings to NGN.

USDT or BTC for AFCON 2027 betting?

USDT, in almost every case. Your bankroll is going to sit between qualifier matchdays for weeks at a time. A KES or NGN bankroll moves against the dollar in those windows; a BTC bankroll can move 15–20% in a fortnight. USDT pegs to the dollar, so your wagering math stays honest from the May 2026 draw all the way to the July 2027 final. Use TRON or Solana rails β€” settlement is near-instant and fees are cents.

Can I use M-Pesa to fund an AFCON 2027 bet?

Yes, via P2P. Convert KES on M-Pesa to USDT through Binance P2P (or a similar P2P desk), then deposit the USDT to your sportsbook. Withdrawals reverse the path. Our M-Pesa walkthrough covers every step β€” typical cost is a 0.5–2% P2P spread.

Are AFCON tournament bonuses worth claiming?

Sometimes. The headline percentage almost never matches the real Keep Rate once wagering, minimum-odds, max-bet, and contribution rules are applied. Run any AFCON 2027 welcome or tournament-themed offer through our calculator before you opt in β€” a 100% deposit match commonly drops to a 30–60% real Keep Rate, sometimes lower if the wagering multiplier is above 35x.
